Microsoft Ignite 2019 – Day 1 – Keynote and announcements

I have the privilege of attending the Microsoft Ignite 2019 event in Orlando, Florida this year. This is Microsofts' biggest event of the year where all Microsoft technologies are presented, including Azure and all the SaaS services on top of it.

Today was the day 1 of the Microsoft Ignite 2019 conference. Today is when the conference actually started and you can see that from the amount of people compared to yesterday.

The main event was the keynote held by Microsofts CEO Satya Nadella. He started by saying that Tech intensity = (Tech adoption x Tech capability)^Trust. In other words, Trust is the most important aspect of everything.

Azure Synapse

The main announcements from Satyas keynote were the new service called Azure Synapse which seems to take data analytics to a new level providing very easy ways for end users to analyse petabytes of data a lot faster than competition, they say. This will definately be very interesting to all customers who are looking at analyzing large datasets.

Some pretty heavy numbers there comparing to AWS Redshift and Google BigQuery!

Azure Arc

The other very interesting annoucement is Azure Arc, which promises to unify your datacenter and Azure. It allows you to deploy Azure SQL into your on premise environment managed via the Azure portal. The Hybrid cloud seems to be a hot topic at Microsoft, with new Azure Edge devices being released at the same time that bring Azure closer.

Beyond Satya

I also attended the Technical Keynote by Jason Zander and Julia White labeled Invent with purpose on Azure. Here we learned a little bit more about how the Synapse and Arc work via additional live demos. Another interesting topic was Visual Studio Online which will allow you to spin up development environments in seconds to work on specific code in a specific Github repo. No need to setup local environments etc to quickly do something, super cool!

In summary

To summarize, there were live demos and zero glitches. The sessions after the keynotes were not very appealing and because it is the first day they were mostly too full. Checkout my post from yesterday!

Oh by the way, SQL Server 2019 was also announced as GA!
