Microsoft Ignite 2019 – Afterthoughts

I had the privilege of attending the Microsoft Ignite 2019 event in Orlando, Florida this year. This is Microsofts' biggest event of the year where all Microsoft technologies are presented, including Azure and all the SaaS services on top of it.

Microsoft Ignite 2019 is now over. Most people have arrived back to their home countries and tomorrow is a normal day in the office. I am typing this while on the last leg of my return journey, in a train between Helsinki and Turku and I thought it is a opportune moment to recap last week.

To summarize

To summarize the week I start with how I feel. I am absolutely tired! My travel started already Thursday 31.10. and is ending today Sunday 10.11. Almost every day at Ignite I spent roughly 12 hours learning, researching, figuring out and more. Although I am tired, I look back and think it was worth the effort. I don’t get too much exposure to the Microsoft Azure “ecosystem” apart from news articles and this was a very efficient way to get the latest and greatest updates such as Synapse and Arc. Also the discussions with Microsoft professionals and other attendees solidified my self-image about what I know.

The cloud is just somebody elses computer

Stop saying that. Like I mentioned in one of my vlog’s (only in Finnish unfortunately) that I dislike the trend I sensed about bringing the cloud closer to your own datacenter. I also had a discussion with one person who said Azure Stack is the best way for him to run all his workloads because it enables him to use a single portal (Azure) and not worry about money spend on Azure itself. He had a tough procurement department behind him who would not understand how pay-as-you-go works and challenged each and every monthly change in the invoices. So I recommend all CIO’s to make cloud fundamentals a mandatory training for all departments; HR and Finance included. The world has already changed, get on with the train.

Positive notes

What I most enjoyed at the conference (apart from the Thursday afternoon party) were the sessions and discussions about Azure DevOps and Azure Migration. These are things that every company should be utilizing today if they want to be on top. Azure DevOps makes it very, very easy to adopt a CI/CD pipeline for building and deploying your software – especially on Azure. If you are using other 3rd party tools today you might want to check it out and see how much effort it would be to change to Azure DevOps. The Migration is part of the Cloud Journey and a lot of companies are trying to embark it. The new versions of the Azure Migrate with agentless discovery capabilities etc will make the effort of beginning the journey so much easier – and it is free to use!

Summa summarum,

Microsoft Ignite – I will be back
